I Never Can Go Back
I stand before you, as I follow from behind
Arrive before I’ve started out, but then gone before my time
I think that every child that’s born upon this earth
Has just arrived from Eden with the pain that comes with birth
And why I say I never can go back
Two angels stand with flaming swords to block my only path
I am a Catholic, I’m a Protestant, I’m a Jew
A pagan and an atheist with moralistic views
I have a hunger I can never satisfy
A thirst that never will be quenched and will not be denied
And why I say I never can go back
The game's a‘foot, the hunt is on, the shotgun’s off the rack
We are the chosen ones, we’re the privileged, we’re the few
We live, we die, we multiply, we think therefore we do
We are all angels and we’re the devil in disguise
We are the perpetrators and the victims of our crimes
And why I say I never can go back
What’s past is past, what’s done is done, all things must come to pass
I’ve been a banker, I’ve been a beggar, I’ve been a thief
My children run from door to door and shout out “Trick or Treat”.
I’ve been a preacher, a politician, and a buffoon,
A scientist and a soldier with this gun that goes Ka-Boom!
And why I say I never can go back
I’ve been there and I’ve done that, don’t confuse me with your facts
All things are possible because nothing is denied
And every blessed one of us can run, but cannot hide
There is this final truth that each of us must face
That death will come to each of us, unique in time and place
And why I say I never can go back
‘cause every time I turn around, I see blood on my tracks
