Baldwin-Whitehall School District - Music Department

Tri-M Music Honor Society

Tri-M, or Modern Music Masters, is a national music honor society whose members are selected for their exceptional musicianship, scholarship, service, and character. 10th-12th grade Baldwin High School music students who meet the criteria may apply for membership and take part in our mission to further impact our school district and community through music. The four core principles that our Tri-M students must uphold are as follows.

1. Music (Ensemble) Performance
2. Scholarship
3. Service
4. Character

1. Music Ensemble Performance Requirement

We believe in the power of musical performance! We also believe that music education contributes strongly to the well-roundedness of our students and it should be a part of every child’s school day as part of a well-designed and coherent curriculum.  Therefore, our Tri-M Applicants must meet the requirements of A, B, and C in order to be eligible.

A.) Grade Level Requirement: Must be a 10th, 11th, or 12th Grade Baldwin High School Student.

B). Ensemble Music Course(s)
Students must be in either Honors Highlander Choir, Honors Stage Band Class, or Honors Wind Ensemble, or Orchestra (since no Honors Orchestra course is offered). Students must maintain membership in at least one of these ensembles for the entire school year.

AND at least one...

C.) Ensemble Benchmarks
We also believe that honors society students need to go above and beyond.  Therefore, in addition to curricular ensemble membership, students must meet at least one of the benchmarks listed below:
  • Audition, qualify, and participate in PMEA festival competitions
  • Participate in an outside performing ensemble such as TRYPO, PYPO, PYSO, Pittsburgh Youth Choir, Junior Mendelssohn, etc. (The ensemble must be sponsored by a professional music organization).
  • Member of Baldwin’s Musical Cast or Pit Orchestra for HS/MS musical production
  • Member of Baldwin Highlander Marching Band
  • Member of Baldwinaires

Students must maintain membership for the full season/year.

2. Scholarship Requirement (Academics)

Tri-M Members must maintain the highest academic standards and are required to maintain an A in all music courses and an A or at least a *B in each of my other courses.  (The B is not an average of your non-music course grades, but individual grades).

*Honors Courses= add 5 points to your grade. CHS & AP Courses= add 10 points to your grade. (Your directors will add the points when you submit your grades).

Grades must be uploaded and submitted 4 times during the year:

Application- When you apply
2nd Nine Weeks End- Last Day of Marking Period
3rd Nine Weeks End- Last Day of Marking Period
4th Nine Weeks "End" on the first Friday in May

Final eligibility: Unfortunately, if your grades do not qualify on this day, members will not continue membership in Tri-M for this school year. (Seniors will unfortunately lose the privilege of receiving graduation program acknowledgement and wearing a Tri-M Cord). Cords and certificates will be handed out at the Music Banquet.

3. Service Requirement

There will be two separate Service Requirements:

1. Independent Service Performance Requirement: (First SEMESTER). Although you may find your own performance, there are many school-sponsored performance opportunities that will fulfill Tri-M members' Independent Music Performance requirement.  Use the form below to schedule your performance. There is also an evidence form below where members must upload evidence. Here are some ideas. The event must be a part of the Baldwin-Whitehall Community.
  • Sing the National Anthem at a sports or school event.
  • Form a quartet and play in the lobby for a school board meeting or school event.
  • Organize a small group to play at a Baldwin-Whitehall assisted living center.

2. Group Project Performance Requirement:
  • Members must also participate in the creation and implementation of a Tri-M Annual Group Service Project.  Together, we will meet, design, plan, and implement a group project that uses music to impact our school and/or community.  Past examples include the following:
  • Tri-M Music Unity Grams and Unity Day- Groups of students created musical "Thank You" video messages for Nurses, Paras, Secretaries, Board Members, Custodians, Administrators, Security, Cafeteria, Counselors and more.
  • (Teacher) Talent Show- Students raised $600 for charity with a talent show.
  • Partners Instrument Day and Residence at Whitehall Performances

Important: You may not double these events for use with requirements needed for other clubs such as NHS, NAHS, Baldwinaires, or other.

4. Character Requirement

Tri-M Students MUST maintain the highest decorum with excellent attitude and behavioral standing among faculty, staff, coaches, directors, etc. Any report of incidents involving poor attitude, behavior, academic integrity, and/or failure to uphold the highest standards in character is cause for loss of membership. Membership names may be submitted to teachers, coaches, and administrators.  Any report of concerns in this area will prompt an evaluation procedure and may cause loss of membership.
